Spain debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest 1961, finishing 9th. Since 1999, Spain is one of the Big Five (along with France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy) and therefore automatically allowed to participate in the final.
Spain has won the contest twice, first in 1968 with the song La, la, la sung by Massiel and in 1969, when Salomé's Vivo cantando was involved in a four-way tie with the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom. Spain has only hosted the contest once, in 1969, since lots were drawn after 1969's four-way tie, and the contest was hosted by the Netherlands. As of 2021, Spain has not won since; their current fifty-year gap between victories is the longest among active participants.
Spain has competed in the contest continuously since the country's debut in 1961, having already appeared in 60 consecutive contests. The only country with a longer run of uninterrupted Eurovision appearances is the United Kingdom, ever-present since 1959.
One of Spain's biggest success stories was the creation of the series Operación Triunfo to choose their Eurovision entrant which would become popular worldwide as the Star Academy franchise. Between 2002 and 2004, the series produced three consecutive top-10 finishes at the contest.

Trivia[]
- The country is one of six to have participated in every contest since their debut, the others being Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Latvia, and Moldova.
- With Eaea placing 17th in 2023, Spain has ranked in every position in the final at least once (excluding 27th place, which was only a possible final placement in 2015 due to Australia automatically qualifying as a guest participant).
