San Marino has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest six times, debuting in the 2008 contest, followed by participation from 2011 to the present.
Despite having participated four times prior to qualifying, San Marino's entrants, next to those of other three countries (Andorra, the Czech Republic and Montenegro); have never qualified from the semifinals. Hence, they have never performed in a Eurovision final until 2014 where Montenegro also qualified as an independent nation for the first time.
Valentina Monetta represented San Marino in 2012 and 2013, and did again in 2014, making her the first singer to participate in three consecutive contests since Udo Jürgens, who competed in 1964, 1965 and 1966, finally qualifying for the final for the very first time. Monetta broke a "prophecy" of winning at least once in three consecutive performances.
San Marino primarily votes with juries, as they do not have a sufficient independent televoting system (they share Italy's phone network).
