Romania debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 after failing to qualify from the qualification round in place for former Yugoslav and debuting Balkan countries in 1993.
They have attempted to participate 21 times but failed to qualify from the audio-only qualification round in 1996. When the semi-finals were introduced in 2004, they had a 100% qualification record including winning the semi-final in 2005 and coming 2nd in the semi in 2014. That qualification record came to an end in 2018 when The Humans failed to advance from the second semifinal. and since then only qualified again once, in 2022.
Romania was relegated from participating in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001 for failing to achieve a good placing for the contests they weren't relegated from. However, in 2002, Monica Anghel and Marcel Pavel's 9th place drastically upturned Romania's results and brought the country out of relegation for the first time.
On 22 April 2016, the EBU pulled Romania from the 2016 contest due to massive unpaid financial debts owed by TVR dating back to 2007 and withdrew its member services from the channel. However, on 6 June 2016, the Romanian government announced that it would step up and pay back all of TVR's debts, helping the country return for 2017.
Since 2024, the country isn't participating in the contest. There were talks between Romania's national broadcaster and the EBU about the countries return, but they led to nowhere.
