Greece joined Eurovision in 1974 with Marinella as its first representative at the contest in Brighton. Since then, it has only missed six contests in its history and won in 2005 after 31 years of waiting - a record that stood until Finland got its first victory in 2006. In the 20th century, it achieved only two top 5 finishes before finishing in third place in 2001 (their 5th-place finish in 1992 remains the highest placing for a song sung in the Greek language).

In the semi-final era, Greece has had a spotless record, qualifying for the final in every contest since 2004 and achieving 9 top 10 finishes. They have never finished in the last place at all in their contest history.

When Greece's national channel ERT was shut down in 2013, the EBU allowed Greece to compete at the 2014 contest in Copenhagen under special circumstances while a new channel was being put together. On 4 December 2014, newly established broadcaster NERIT was made a full EBU member, allowing Greece to participate in the 2015 contest in Vienna.

On 11 June 2015, it was announced that ERT had re-launched its broadcast operations after a 2-year shutdown. Greece's 100% qualification record came to an end in 2016 when Argo was unable to qualify from the semi-finals.
