Azerbaijan made its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, after İTV became an active member of the EBU. İTV had broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest in previous years, purchasing broadcasting rights from the EBU.
Azerbaijan is the last country in the Caucasus Region to debut: Armenia was the first one, in 2006, followed by Georgia in 2007. Since their debut, they had qualified for the final every year up until 2018, when their streak was broken.
They have been known to use Swedish writers and producers to help craft their entries, and have never performed in their own language.
